Women farm workers on the Sandringham Estate

“For the work of these herdswomen was very strenuous, demanding they should be out by 6am and often keeping them going till after dark. Pictures of them clad in high boots, corduroy breeches and linen coats, and in company with three Dexter Angus bulls were shown on every cinema screen throughout the world at the time, and no doubt helped considerably to stimulate recruiting for the WLA.”

Though the women who worked on the Sandringham Estate in 1916 weren’t officially Land Girls, they were important in increasing the acceptance of women on the land.
