WW1 Pack Drill WLA Watercolour

This watercolour of a First World War Land Girl, entitled ‘Pack Drill’, comes from a sketchbook held in the collections of Carisbrooke Castle Museum. The former curator of the museum gave the sketchbook to the collection.

The album is full of First World War themed drawings; many with a satirical slant. The museum believes the artist most probably came from Ryde, on the Isle of Wight, as various places in the town provide backdrops to the sketches. This is the only sketch in the book which relates to the WLA.

Many thanks to Dr Rachel Tait, Curator of Carisbrooke Castle Museum, for sharing this sketch with me.
