Doreen Roberts celebrating VE Day

Mrs Doreen Roberts celebrating VE day with fellow Land Girl

Doreen Margaret Jarman served from May 1942 to June 1947 in the Women’s Land Army. Enrolled in Newport, Gwent, she trained in Horticulture at Cannington, Somerset. For part of the time, she worked with the Parks Department in Newport.

Doreen’s daughter Gwyneth recounts how her mother was very proud of serving in the Woman’s Land Army. Doreen is the Land Girl on the right-hand side, helping to feed the pigeons on VE Day, 8th May 1945. When this photograph was taken, Doreen was Mrs Roberts having been widowed when her husband was killed in action at El Alamein, shortly after they married.

Many thanks to Gwyneth James for sharing this photograph.
