Proficiency Tests

During the war, proficiency tests were introduced to measure and recognise Land Girls agricultural  skills. According to Irene Grimwood, the ‘General Farming’ test involved the following:-

  • Pulling and topping two rows of sugar beet
  • Spreading two rows of manure
  • Identifying different plants and weeds
  • Answering questions on general farming

If a Land Girl passed with over 75%, they received a ‘Proficiency Certificate in Field Work’.
